A bold carved and giltwood console table with a faux-marble painted top, distinguished by its highly unusual amphora-form supports with scrolling handles and fluted bodies.
Unusually tall and shallow in its proportions, the design gives prominence to these sculptural supports, while tapering rear pilaster legs and a carved strigulated frieze complete the architectural composition.
Probably originating from Turin, the design evokes the bold neoclassical furniture produced there during the late eighteenth century, particularly the work of the celebrated royal woodcarver Francesco Bolgiè (1752–1834), whose innovative designs helped define the Turinese Louis XVI style.
