A Carved Elm Unicorn
English, George II period, mid-18th century
A delightfully characterful heraldic Unicorn carved from solid elm.
The unicorn is shown rearing, with its head turned in profile and characterful mouth slightly open.
The mane and tail are worked in deep flowing curls and overall the surface has a rich, warm colour with deep patination.
Probably original part of a larger heraldic crest, now mounted on a lead base.
