A LATE VICTORIAN MAHOGANY OPEN ARMCHAIR IN THE GEORGE II STYLE, C.1880
With a shaped back and out carved arms each carved with a feathered eagle's bust terminal, on acanthus clasped and twin opposing scrolled eagle bust carved front legs, terminating in claw and ball feet, with splayed rear legs, stamped: '7668.' This chair appears to have been directly inspired by a George II mahogany open armchair that previously formed part of the renowned Frederic Parker Collection of chairs.
This 18th century example, dated circa 1745, is illustrated in The Frederick Parker Collection, A Selection of Chairs, edited by C.C. Stevens, 2003, London, FP 112, pp.'s 22-23. The carving to the arms and legs is very similar , with closely related out-scrolled and eagle carved arms. Added to this, these two chairs have comparable scrolled acanthus clasped cabriole front legs that are carved with almost identical scrolled eagle bust spandrels, as well as both having virtually the same type of 'claw and ball' feet.
