A MARBLE STUDY OF A LION, AFTER BERTEL THORVALDSEN (1770-1844)
“Wear away though it may, this monument will nonetheless stand tall above all others”:
This is a pronouncement that Thorvaldsen is himself supposed to have made about his monumental Dying Lion, as the monument— which stands by an old sandstone-quarry lake in Lucerne’s glacier garden.
This finely executed marble study dates to the second half of the 19th century.
