ARCHITECTURAL CAPRICCIO ,C.1650 (SOLD)

AN ARCHITECTURAL CAPRICCIO OIL ON CANVAS , circle of Viviano Codazzi (1604 -1670)
This 17th century oil on canvas of Roman ruins is attributed to Viviano Codazzi,
Viviano Codazzi (c. 1604 – 5 November 1670) was an Italian architectural painter who was active during the Baroque period. He is known for his architectural paintings, capricci, compositions with ruins, and some vedute. He worked in Naples and Rome. He is known in older sources as Viviano Codagora or il Codagora.
The use of more umber tones in this painting, coupled with the imagined fresco incorporated into the ruins is comparable with some of Codazzi’s earlier signed work and push the attribution towards Codazzi over some of his contemporaries of the period.
presented in its original carved frame with silvered ‘mecca’ finish (untouched).

Provenance: Private Collection, Chateau de Vouzeron, Upper Loire, Department du Cher, France

Height: 116cm
Width: 90cm
Depth: 7cm
