Marble Lions , XIX Century
A Pair of A Pair of Reclining Marble Lions
After Antonio Canova (1757–1822)
Italian, 19th century
A charming pair of intricately carved marble lions, modelled after the celebrated sculptures by Antonio Canova for the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St Peter’s Basilica, Rome, completed in 1792.
Depicted in contrasting states of repose, one lion sleeps with its head resting upon its paws, whilst the other remains alert, its head raised and eyes open. Both are finely carved with elaborate, curling manes and powerful naturalistic forms, resting upon integral rectangular plinths.
