This life-size fragment depicts a muscular torso of a male figure.
Although a powerful piece of sculpture, the sculptor has rendered the anatomy with considerable sensitivity, subtly defining the sternum, ribcage and musculature beneath the skin, creating a very natural sense of form and movement.
The gentle shift in the body's centre line hints at the sculptor's understanding of the contrapposto pose, and which also gives the piece a subtle sense of movement.
Mounted on a Red Griotte marble socle which deep burgundy tones contrast beautifully with the cooler white marble.
