George II Table
A George II Mahogany Tripod Table
English, circa 1755
A particularly elegant and finely carved George II mahogany tripod table of excellent colour and unusually refined proportions.
The circular tilt-top is edged with an unusual carved border formed as a continuous sequence of scrolling waves rather than a more common pie crust , this creates a far more fluid appeal than many mid-18th century tripod tables.
The top rests on a finely turned and faceted baluster column above a triform base with sharply carved cabriole legs enriched with rocaille and acanthus ornament.
The feet are equally fine and unusual - they terminate in tightly scrolled toes with distinctive opposing shell carving to the reverse - a particularly sophisticated detail.
The carving throughout is exceptionally crisp and confident, particularly around the rim and the flowing lower section of the base, giving the table a lightness and sculptural quality rarely found in standard tripod forms of this period.
A relatable tripod table was sold at Christie’s, London, Five Private Collections, 19 July 2022, lot 68.
Height: 78 cm
Diameter: 82.5 cm
