Italian Walnut Cassettone
Northern Italy, 17th Century
Height:
Width:
Depth:
A superb sculptural walnut commode of strong architectural form, the façade arranged as four long drawers with deeply carved geometric and serpentine mouldings.
The bold relief carving wraps around the canted corners, giving the piece a real sense of movement and continuity rather than a flat, applied decoration.
The drawer fronts are defined by pronounced, almost calligraphic mouldings, alternating between interlocking strapwork and flowing, undulating lines.Original brass handles and escutcheons remain, set within the carved framework.
Raised on turned bun feet, the whole retains a rich, deep patination with excellent colour throughout.
