Monumental Italian Mirror , XVII Century
An Ebonised Mirror of Unusually large Scale
Italy, 17th Century
Height: 163cm With: 134cm Depth: 12cm
This boldly proportioned ripple-moulded frame with projected corners follows a design popularised in Flanders in the mid-17th century but was likely made in Italy, where the influence of Northern European craftsmen working in Rome and Florence was widespread.
Its exceptional size sets it apart - far larger than most surviving mirror of the period - an ambitious original commission.
