Carved plaque

Italian carved wood relief of a classical warrior
Late 18th / Early 19th century
Attributed to the workshop of Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo (1745–1820)

An oval relief carved in boxwood and partially stained, depicting an idealised classical warrior in profile, wearing a Corinthian helmet surmounted by a winged dragon crest. The portrait is framed by a finely carved ribbon-tied fruiting vine border and mounted in its original rectangular giltwood frame with moulded and beaded inner slip.

Closely related oval profile portraits appear within documented works by Bonzanigo, notably as part of the carved ensemble Trofeo militare (late 18th century), preserved in the collections of La Venaria Reale, Turin, where comparable classical profile medallions are incorporated into a larger Neoclassical sculptural composition.

Height: 21cm x Width: 18.5 cm
