Study of Homer

Italian School, 18th Century
Red chalk on paper.

Height: 190mm With: 150mm

A finely observed red-chalk study of the poet Homer, rendered with the clarity and restraint characteristics of 18th Century Italian, neoclassical draughtsmanship. The artist captures the sculptural gravitas and contemplative expression seen in ancient busts of Homer, s such as those in the Vatican and Capitoline collections.

Drawings of this type were made by artists and collectors alike as exercises in connoisseurship and as records of admitted antiquities encountered on the Grand Tour.
