A Neoclassical Italian Marquetry Commode
Lombardy or Tuscany, second half of the 18th century.
Walnut and fruitwood inlay on a pine carcass

A refined Italian commode of neoclassical form, veneered in figured walnut and inlaid with fruitwood. The three long drawers are framed by scrolling foliate borders and geometric banding, with similar marquetry to the stiles and side panels.
The top is centred by a heraldic cartouche flanked by grotesque figures and volutes, drawing on classical Renaissance designs.
This commode although generous in detail shows a more restrained hand of the cabinet maker than others of this type, with more focus on the line, form and geometric inlays.
Provenance: Private collection, Scotland; by descent in the Wolfe Murray family.
