The She-Wolf (Lupa Romana)
Bronze Model of the She-Wold (Lupa Romana) on a Giallo Antico Marble Base
Italian, late 18th Century
Height: 14cm Width: 22cm Depth: 24cm
A finely cast bronze model of the she-wolf of Roman legend.
Modelled with tense musculature, pricked ears and a slightly open jaw. The form is closely related to the famed Capitoline Wolf, one of the enduring emblems of Rome.
Executed in dark, well-preserved patination and mounted on a boldly figured giallo Antico marble base.
Unlike many later Grand Tour versions, which include the twin infants Romulus and Remus suckling beneath the she-wolf, this earlier model follows the purer, archaic composition of the wolf alone.
