A Monumental Marble Bust of Jupiter of Otricolo
After the Antique, Italian, Circa 1800
Provenance: Private Collection (United Kingdom)
Height: 100cm (approx) Width: 61cm Depth: 45cm
This monumental marble bust represents Jupiter (Greek: Zeus), king of the gods and follows the celebrated antique prototype discovered at Otricoli in the late 18th century, now in the Vatican. Carved with deeply drilled locks, a pronounced brow and a voluminous beard.
Busts of this size and scale are exceptionally rare. It was likely an architectural or decorative centrepieces for a grand interior or classical sculpture gallery, comparable in scale and aesthetic to works recorded in aristocratic collections such as that of Thomas Hope at Deepdene.
See research image for what appears to be a similar bust of Jupiter shown in situ within one of Deepdene's sculpture galleries.
