Son of Laocoön
Attributed to Bartolomeo Cavaceppi (1716-1799)
Rome, late 18th Century
Height: 59cm Width: 36cm Depth: 19cm
This terracotta bust depicts one of the sons of Laocoön, cast ib the throes of divine entanglement. With upward gaze and parted lips, the youth's expression is charged with the tragic intensity that characterises the famed Hellenistic group unearthed in Rome in 1506.
The present work is attributed to Barolomeo Cavaceppi, the leading Roman restorer and sculptor of antique subjects in the second half of the 18th century. Cavaceppi's studio produced numerous reimagining of classical models for the Grand Tour clientele, including terracotta busts such as this.
Here, the youthful figure is rendered with remarkable psychological depth. His hair, crisply modelled in rhythmic locks, and the boldly incised pupils are trademarks of Cavaceppi's hand.
