Rococo Table, C.1730-50
A Rococo Carved Giltwood Console Table
Bavarian, circa 1730-50
Height: 77cm Width: 106cm Depth: 53cm
This exuberantly carved console table is a striking example of Rococo design, its bold, asymmetrical ornamentation animated with scrollwork, acanthus and shell motifs. Executed in richly carved wood, the surface retains remarkable traces of its original polychrome and gilded decoration - revealed following the recent removal of later overpaint.
The table's serpentine front and cabriole legs are encrusted with deeply undercut foliage, lending the whole a sense of movement and theatricality. The apron centres on a dramatic pierced cartouche, its composition swirling with C-scrolls and foliate forms and flanked by carving that evokes the texture of fish scales. It is topped with a richly figured, bevelled slab of Portosana Marble, prized for its warm rose and grey veining. The legs terminate in stylised paw feet, grounding the piece with an assertive presence.
